In this video Resident Builder Peter Wolfkamp talks to our Factory Manager Carl about how Bailey Tanks has overcome the challenges of making a slimline water tank from recycled materials.

It has been historically challenging to make a tank from recycled material due to a number of challenges. Initially, the rural settings of water tanks make collection difficult when tanks reach the end-of-their life cycle. The processing of recycled materials can lead to a loss of integrity, requiring us to adjust their production processes to maintain quality.

Bailey Tanks has developed a recycling program to overcome these challenges, ensuring that old tanks can be transformed into new products.

graphic showing circular process of recycling a end-of-life tank into a slimline tankThe recycling process begins when customers return their old tanks, we accept any PE tanks, not just our own. These pieces are then collected and sent to a third-party partner, where the material is cleaned and processed into usable material. It is then returned to us to be moulded into a brand-new water tank.

We use this recycled material to produce a slimline tank non-potable 2000L and 3000L tanks nicknamed "Recycled Ruth". These are slimline water tanks perfect for the urban setting. These tanks are designed for non-potable sources, such as rainwater harvesting and reuse, as they are made with 100% recycled materials.

David Bailey, CEO "We’re extremely proud to offer slimline tanks that are made from 100% recycled plastic, and we plan to expand the use of recycled plastic into other sizes"

The Recycled Ruth tank is a step forward in our commitment to sustainability. We are proud to offer a cradle-to-cradle approach for our water tanks and align the company with the principles of a circular economy, promoting the responsible use and reuse of materials. Bailey Tanks’ other recycling initiatives include the use of post-consumer waste, such as milk and cleaning bottles, in the production of its Black Snake drainage pipe, which uses up to 200,000 bottles per week.

In the future, we hope to expand the product range, from the slimline tank to even more products across our range made from recycled materials.
